Celebrating Mentorship: Girls in Technology Experience

It’s never too late to reflect on and share impactful experiences. Recently, while discussing mentorship with colleagues, I was reminded of the privilege I had as a 2019-2020 Mentor for Girls in Technology, a program led by Women in Technology (WIT). It was an experience filled with inspiration, growth, and unforgettable moments.

As a Mentor, I had the opportunity to share my journey in STEM, participate in panel discussions, and offer advice on navigating competitive STEM environments. I also had the pleasure of connecting with fellow mentors, each bringing their unique perspectives and stories. But the most rewarding part? Listening to the driven, insightful, and curious young protégés. Their enthusiasm was contagious, and their questions challenged us to think deeply about our own experiences.

One moment that stood out was during a panel discussion on Leadership. A freshman in high school asked, “In a STEM industry dominated by men, how does a woman in STEM show her female side?” It was a powerful and thought-provoking question. My response, echoed by the panel, was that gender is becoming less relevant in STEM. Employers today value intelligence, innovation, and capability above all else. However, it’s also important to embrace and celebrate the unique qualities that women bring to the workplace, such as multitasking skills and emotional intelligence.

We don’t need to hide or diminish our femininity in STEM—we should let it shine. Being “girly” means being confident, capable, and powerful in our own way. To all the aspiring STEM professionals out there, be unapologetically yourselves. You’re smart, capable, and destined to make a difference.

Cheers to all the amazing young women pursuing their STEM dreams! I look forward to seeing the incredible achievements of the next generation and can’t wait for another inspiring year with Girls in Technology. Let’s keep thriving together!
